Devastating earthquake hits Croatia! This is how you can help

DONATE HERE: https://charity.gofundme.com/o/en/campaign/croatia-earthquake-relief-funds

We are monitoring the situation in Croatia following the devastating earthquake that struck near the towns of Petrinja and Sisak, and caused major damage and loss of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who died and are injured, all those impacted, as well as with the first responders and volunteers who continue their search and rescue operations.

We know that the widespread damage to homes, hospitals, kindergartens, churches and other buildings has left many families without water, heat, electricity and shelter.  Many of these same families, in the Banovina region, also suffered greatly during the Homeland War.

As global Croatian organizations, we stand united with our homeland. In the days to come, we will identify opportunities where our help will be most meaningful. As was the case with the relief efforts during the aftermath of the earthquake in Zagreb earlier this year, all funds raised will be used to help those most affected by the earthquake.  In consultation with vetted organizations in Croatia, our representatives will determine how our help will be distributed.

We call on all of our members and friends to join us.

Rimac Automobili writes success story for Croatia

Rimac Automobili deal to acquire Bugatti still unknown

ZAGREB, Sept 17 (Hina) – “We cannot comment on the speculation,” the Rimac Automobili company said on Thursday following media reports that the Croatian carmaker from Sveta Nedelja will take over the famous Bugatti brand.

The media received a similar response from Bugatti as well. Entrepreneur Mate Rimac, Bugatti and Volkswagen declined to comment to Reuters on the information about the sale.

The news about the possible takeover of Bugatti followed after Mate Rimac last week announced at the Entrepreneurial Mindset conference “some new investments” that would resound in the business world.

Porsche acquired a 10% share in Rimac Automobili in 2018, and bought another 5.5% in 2019. Other investors in the Croatian company include Hyundai, Jaguar, Koenigsegg and Magne, the magazine recalled. The Chinese battery producer Camel Group and a Chinese investor are also shareholders.

Citing unnamed sources familiar with the talks, Manager Magazin said that Volkswagen’s committees would discuss the sale of Bugatti to Mate Rimac this year, as quoted by Reuters, and the news has also been carried by domestic media outlets today.

“Rimac has developed an electric supercar platform, which he supplies to other carmakers, including Automobili Pininfarina. Volkswagen unit Porsche owns a stake in Rimac.

“Bugatti (…) will likely be transferred to Rimac via Porsche, in exchange for a bigger share in Europe’s answer to Tesla. Sources say VW executives approved the deal last week, but it has yet to be signed off by the supervisory board,” British Car Magazine speculates.

Volkswagen no longer wants to spend money and manpower on Bugatti, and wants to devote all resources to the massive investment programme in electrification, digitalisation and autonomous driving, said Car Magazine.

“While the true value of Rimac is yet to-be-determined by an IPO, Bugatti is probably worth €500m in today’s depressed market. But perhaps there is no need for any money to flow at all in the deal,” said the magazine.

Rimac Automobili today “employs more than 600 people who specialise in electromobility, battery development and performance electronics,” Car Magazine said.

“Rimac may be dubbed Europe’s Tesla, but while Elon Musk’s firm has churned out more than 600,000 Model 3 and Y cars in the last three years, the Croatians have made but a handful of electric hypercars. The first was the Concept One, introduced in 2011 and of which only eight units were made. The latest is the awesome 1914bhp C-Two coupe which has yet to enter production,” Car Magazine added.

Investment with Social Impact to Help Return Dormant Croatian Land to Productivity!

Terra Adriatica Announces Partnership with Feelsgood Social Impact Investment Fund to Return Land Potentially Worth Billions of Euros to Productive Use in the Republic of Croatia.

Terra Adriatica estimates that at least 10% of all Croatian land lies economically dormant due to the complexity, and therefore cost, of establishing legal title.

This issue represents lost opportunity measured in the tens of billions of Euros for the country. It impacts not only the owners of affected land but also local communities missing out on the economic activity that its legitimate use would bring.

FEELSGOOD CAPITAL PARTNERS, creators of Croatia’s first-ever social impact fund, have agreed in principle to partner with Terra Adriatica to solve this long-standing issue by providing initial funding for a pilot project expected to unlock the latent value held within 300-500 hectares of land. The funding is subject to finalization of the fund’s authorization process and completion of due diligence of the project.

This first project represents the culmination of five years’ work by Terra Adriatica researching and developing Artificial Intelligence technology and process-led solutions to the problem. In just a few months since launch last September, the Company has identified potential claims on behalf of thousands of registered users to almost half a million hectares cumulatively.

The investment from FEELSGOOD CAPITAL PARTNERS would fund the cost of cleaning and selling land selected for the Pilot Project – at no upfront cost, or risk to the sellers, who will receive 90% of the net proceeds.

Davor Lauc, Co-Founder and Chief Science Officer at Terra Adriatica, said,

“The solution to the highly complex issue of “locked land necessitates a multi-dimensional approach. We combine advanced technology, automated processes and, crucially, a financial framework designed to appeal to an investor community looking for sustainable, asset-backed yields to fund the process. We are delighted to welcome FEELSGOOD CAPITAL PARTNERS onboard and look forward to delivering the first of many projects to return Croatian land to productivity.”

Dinko Novoselec, Co-Founder of FEELSGOOD CAPITAL PARTNERS, said,

“It is not often that you come across a project of such scale that also has the potential to impact local communities so profoundly. The project aligns fully with the remit of the fund to support innovative, Croatian enterprises positively impacting society by facilitating the generation of jobs and growth.”

About Terra Adriatica

Terra Adriatica – www.terraadriatica.hr was formed to challenge what has long held to be a fact in Croatia: that establishing clean title to some land is too hard, too expensive, too complicated and too time-consuming to undertake; in essence, “it is impossible”.

By applying advanced technology and innovative finance solutions to solve these complex challenges, Terra Adriatica will not only realise value for our clients but also the wider economy as the benefit of unlocking the estimated €billions of real estate attracts investment to support jobs and growth in Croatia.

 About Feels Good Capital Partners

FEELSGOOD CAPITAL PARTNERS will launch the Feelsgood Social Impact Investment Fund, the first social impact fund in Croatia, once the process of authorization with the regulatory authorities is completed.

The targeted fund size is EUR 30 million and has a remit to invest in Croatian and Slovenian SMEs committed to providing profitable, environmental and social impact business models.

Croatian American hockey contribution to 1980 USA Olympic Gold

croatian hocky
Author: Steve Rukavina
Many Americans over the age of fifty will remember vividly, the “Miracle on Ice” and what Sports Illustrated called the greatest sports upset of all times. It was roughly forty years ago that the 1980 Winter Olympics were held February 12-24.Twelve hockey teams traveled to Lake Placid in New York. The USA Olympic hockey team defeated the Soviet Union, rated the best hockey team in the world and went on to win the Gold Medal!
It’s a historical fact that the 1980 Winter Olympics were almost boycotted since the Soviet Union had invaded Afghanistan in 1979. The Winter Olympics almost did not happen. American Coach Herb Brooks was not even sure the Olympics would be held untillate in December, 1979.
How many Croatian Americans know that the American hockey line of a center and two wings that scored the most points for the 1980 American Olympic hockey team were all from Minnesota (my home state) and two were Croatian Americans? It is with pleasureand pride that I share a few more details about Mark Pavelich and Buzz Schneider, the two Croatian Americans from the Iron Range of Minnesota who paired up with John “Bah” Harrington from Virginia, Minnesota (my dad’s hometown) to help lead the Americans to the gold medal.
Mark Pavelich
First, the Mark Pavelich story about the Olympic star who actually setup the winning goal against the Russians. Mark, son of Croatian immigrants, grew up in Eveleth Minnesota.  Eveleth was the hometown of another famous hockey player, Croatian  Johnny Mayasich, who many considered the best hockey player of all time in Minnesota and a two time Olympian. Also, it was the home of Joe Begich, longtime Mayor there and Minnesota State Representative and the Uncle to former US Senator Mark Begich, from Alaska (son of Congressman Nick Begich).
Mark was a hockey star at Eveleth High School and then was off to college and hockey at nearby University of Minnesota-Duluth (UMD). Mark played three seasons there before joining the U.S. Olympic team.  The assistant coach there at UMD was Croatian AmericanMike Sertich from Virginia, Minnesota and a neighbor to our Rukavina family in this Iron Range city.
Mark Pavelich played 355 games in the NHL, mostly with the NY Rangers and even scored five goals in one game, the only American ever to do so. This was in a game against the Hartford Whalers  on February 23, 1983 which was all after his stardom in the 1980 Winter Olympics.
Buzz Schneider
It was not a surprise that the Russians scored first with Vladimir “the Tank” Krutov giving the Soviet Union a `1-0 lead at 9:12. Next, the Croatian American, Buzz Schneider, tied the game at 14:03 with an assist from fellow Minnesotan, Mark Pavelich. Buzz’s score got the mostly American crowd to their feet and shouts of “USA-USA” filled the air.
The Russians scored again to take a 2-1 lead at 17:34 and luckily, American Mark Johnson scored with one second left in the first period to tie the
game just before the first intermission.  The Russian coach then pulled Vladislav Tretiak, and replaced his best goalie in a major move that shocked many hockey experts. The second period was dominated by the Soviet team and the Russians went on to outshoot the Americans 12-2 in this period and they took a 3-2 lead at 22:18 and held it throughoutthe second period.
In the final and third period,Mark Johnson’s second goal of the game tied the score at 3-3 at 48:39.It was just eighty-one seconds later at the 50:00 mark that Mike Eruzione scored the fourth American goal on a power play with a Russian in the penalty box. The Americans were now in the lead and it was Mark Pavelichand John Harrington assisting on the go-ahead goal which a few sports reporters called the “shot heard around the world.”
There was still ten minutes left and the Russians swarmed the American net endlessly in those last 600 seconds. Jim Craig, the American goaltender came up with a few incredible saves and stopped 36 of 39 Russian shots on goal that historic day.  The USA won this game with only 16 shots on goal which tells a story in itself about the valiant effort that was required that day to make the winning difference.
Steve Sertich and Buzz Schneider (front row-1976 US Olympic team)
It was in the last few seconds of the game the ABC sports broadcaster Al Michaels uttered the famous phrase, “Do you believe in miracles” and a few seconds later the game was over. The Americans had pulled off the biggest upset in international hockey ever. Buzz Schneider said in an interview many years later, “There was a feeling of magic there and it’s like we were a team of destiny.”
The gold medal round game was Sunday against a tough and talented Finnish team and the upstart young Americans prevailed with a 4-2 win that clinched the gold medal.  Again, it was a bunch of inspired, well-conditioned and well-coached 21 year olds that had beat the Czechs, the Russians and finally, the Finns to claim the gold medal.
The three American teammates from the Iron Range of Minnesota that skated together in the 1980 Olympics on one line, had scored the most points overall in the seven hockey games played at the 1980 Winter Olympics. The Iron Range line, called the “Coneheads” by the Coach Herb Brooks tallied twenty points overall at this Winter Olympics. The two Croatian Americans, Buzz Schneider with eight points and Mark Pavelich with seven points earned Olympic hockey immortality for their team’s triumphant success at the 1980 Winter Olympics. They both have my support for selection and inclusion within the newly created National Federation of Croatian Americans Cultural Foundation-North American Sports Hall of Fame.

Zagreb-Sisak by train in 40 minutes after new rail upgrade

ZAGREB, 2 March 2020 – The Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure of the Republic of Croatia, Oleg Butković, visited infrastructure projects in Sisak on Monday.

The day began with a train ride from Velika Gorica to Sisak where he also visited the upgraded railway station. In Sisak, the railway station has received an operating permit, and after passing some more technical inspections over the next few days, it is set to go into full operation, said HRT journalist Silvana Skocajic.

The completion of the works is delayed due to the underpass. During the excavation of this pavement, new archaeological finds were discovered from the time of ancient Rome. Therefore, numerous permits had to be obtained for further work. The research took three years, and the work to rebuild the station took almost seven years.

The investment in the reconstructed section of the railway from Velika Gorica to Sisak is worth HRK 250 million.

After arriving in Sisak by train, Minister Butkovic said that it was traveling at a speed of about 140 km / h.

“I believe that after the reconstruction of these 25 km, we will travel by train from Zagreb to Sisak in 40 minutes, including stopping to pick up passengers,” he said.

Responding to journalists’ questions, Butkovic said that offers were opened for the Odran Bridge and the connecting road on February 12th.

“Croatian Roads will quickly make the choice. I hope that we will contract the work and start working as soon as possible,” the minister said, pointing out that Croatia is at the top of the EU in built highways.

Filip Zubcic runner-up in World Cup giant slalom in Austria

(Photo: Filip Zubcic/Facebook)

AUSTRIA, 2 March 2020 –Croatia’sFilip Zubcic (27) has produced another fantastic performance to finish second in the 2020 Hinterstoder Alpine Ski World Cup giant slalom in Austria on Monday.

After the first run, Zubcic was in second place, just 0.90 seconds behind the leader Alexis Pinturault from France after finishing in a time of 1:25.20.

The Croatian was second to last to complete the final second run and after a time of 1:17.21, he would take the lead in the event with an overall time of 2:42.41.

Pinturault was last up and with a second run of 1:17.66 would take the victory with an overall time of 2:41.96, just 0.45 seconds ahead of the Croatian.

Last month, Zubcic gave Croatia its first ski World Cup win since Ivica Kostelic back in 2013 after a stunning performance in the men’s World Cup giant slalom on at Yuzawa Naeba in Japan.

An inspiring second run would give him a combined time of 2:37:35 seconds to win his first World Cup giant slalom.

Born in Zagreb, Zubcic has competed for Croatia in two Winter Olympics and five World Championships. The win was the first for Croatia outside the Kostelic family.
