13 November 2019 – Croatian international Sime Vrsaljko has returned to training with his club for the first time after a lengthy break through injury.

Nine months after he underwent surgery on his left knee in Belgium, the 27-year-old right-back was back on Tuesday training for the first time with his club Atletico Madrid.

“Welcome back. The defender completed his first training session on Tuesday and has now entered the final phase of his recovery. The Croat is to carry out personalised readjustment sessions and will progressively start training with his teammates,” the club said in a statement on their website on Tuesday.

Vrsaljko trained on Tuesday at the Wanda Atlético de Madrid Training Complex, almost nine months to the day when he underwent surgery on 13 February.

Vrsaljko’s knee problems started at the 2018 World Cup and continued to restrict him during the start of the 2018/2019 season.

Vrsaljko joined Atletico before the 2016/17 season and was loaned out last year to Italian giants Inter Milan. The Croatian international last played on 13 January for Inter Milan.
